The "HIV-Doesn't-Cause-AIDS" Myth

What could possibly be pseudoscientific about HIV and AIDS? How about this: There are people who believe that HIV does not cause AIDS. Seriously. Anyway, their basic idea is that HIV hasn't been 100% proven to cause AIDS, so we can't assume anything. Maybe they should take a refresher course on burden of proof and the nature of scientific theories. Oh well. Anyway, here are some of their claims:

HIV has never been purified, so we don't know what it is.
Here and here you can find the complete sequences for the two type of HIV. If we never isolated it, then how do we have its genome?

HIV tests are incredibly unreliable. They're only testing against each other
This is not true. If three different tests all give the same result, doesn't that indicate that the result is precise, if not accurate? And if we scale our procedures based on the precise result, does the real, accurate result matter? Besides, nothing is exact in science. The HIV tests are far more exact than these people would have you believe.

AIDS has so many different symptoms, how can it be caused by one virus?
Because HIV weakens the immune system, and allows for other viruses and bacteria the opportunity to attack. This also explains why AIDS patients from different socioeconomic groups get different symptoms of AIDS; different socioeconomic groups are exposed to different pathogens of opportunity.

I sincerely hope that you are now shaking your head, wondering how anyone could believe that HIV does not cause AIDS. If, however, you still hold to this untruth, send me your questions, and I will tell you why you are wrong.
